Description

Costume reference for R.N. Lieutenant coat... For women!

I've been thinking of making one, and so I sketched out how it would look on a female body. Well, on mine that is.

Since I am 5'4'' and rather womanly, (am not going to put measurements here!) with a waist slightly smaller and hips slightly wider than your usual clothes sizing would allow there are a few major alterations to the uniform, as sharp eye will notice.

Biggest being the buttoning of the coat and collar, you would think just to button the lowest three; or go for the "ceremony" buttoning and leaving the coat open if you have some bosom. Also the opening will be much higher than on male and waistcoat slighly longer, and the buttons at the back will be higher too, but the opening of the pleads will be set much lower. And I would also make the pockets diagonal... a little detail that is historically inaccurate, you'd say, but looks much nicer ;)

It seems my new sketch paper doesn't take watercolour well.
A bit scruffy since these were meant to be just notes to myself. Then I thought (and I've been asked to do one for another lady) maybe there are people out there, silly girls like me thinking of making/ordering an uneeform and would like to see how one would look like on them.

And if you even think of using these without permission, may the Maker send plague to you and all your family! It isn't too hard to ASK you know...

I've been starting to think about making my own uniform (and I'm rather 'curvy' too) I think I'll be making one more like Norrington's with the big frock coat to start with as I found a nice tricorn hat at the op shop (crazy hey!) But I have been drooling over Hornblower...ahem, I mean his uniform for some time, so I will have to try and make one of those too. The main problem will be expense and finding a good pattern and modifying it. I will probably have to make myself a first lieut or even a captain ;-) If I ever get those costumes made, I'd love to hop on one of the tall ships around here and start barking out orders while someone takes photos! :-D LOL! Hey we should have our own stark, raving, bonkers female Deviant Art Royal Navy group (guys welcome too, especially if they look like Hornblower, Bush or Norrington...)*drool* ;-)
